Blizzard is opening the gates of World of Warcraft: Forever for a free stress test next week, letting anyone jump into the game without a WoW subscription, game time, beta invite, or pre-purchase. It sounds like a dream chance for curious players to explore the reimagined Azeroth ahead of launch, but there are important limitations you need to understand before logging in.

This free event is a server stress test, not a full open beta. Blizzard’s main goal is to flood the servers with players to test stability, find bugs, and prepare infrastructure ahead of WoW: Forever’s official November launch. That means this is a short, time-limited window. Once the test ends, all characters created during this event will be wiped. No progress, loot, or character names will carry over into the live release.

You don’t need to own the game or pay anything to join. Anyone with a Battle.net account can download and play during the scheduled stress test hours. That’s a big difference compared to the paid beta access that was previously available only to players who bought certain pre-order bundles. If you’ve been on the fence about WoW: Forever, this is your best low-risk way to see what the new version has to offer.

Still, there are catches beyond the character wipe. The test will only run for a set time window. Outside of those hours, the servers will be offline. Some game features may be disabled or unfinished, and you should expect crashes, lag, bugs, and performance issues — this is exactly what Blizzard wants players to encounter and report.

Many fans are excited to finally try WoW: Forever without spending money upfront. But don’t mistake this free stress test for permanent free-to-play access. When WoW: Forever officially launches, it will still require a standard World of Warcraft subscription to play.
